Why is the Sand White in Panama City Beach?

We have all seen the many ads out there promoting the perfect tropical destinations in Jamaica, Cancun, perhaps even Barbados. The one thing all of these ads feature is gorgeous turquoise waters and amazing white sandy beaches. However, what if we told you that you don’t need to travel to those far off destinations to experience those luxuries?

Here in Panama City Beach, we are lucky to be nestled along the beautiful Gulf of Mexico with miles of white sandy beaches!

Regardless of what part of the city you choose to call your home away from home, we guarantee that you will find white sandy beaches around every corner. The Panama City Beach condos on Thomas Drive are the condos that we recommend, due to their amazing picturesque views and close proximity to the beach, but any of our amazing Panama City Beach condos would be perfect for your next vacation.

About the Sand

Our white sandy beaches are what we have come to be known for here in Panama City Beach, but we often get asked what makes our sand so white when other beaches in Florida don’t have the same sand color or quality. What sets us apart is that the North Florida Coast where Panama City Beach is located is actually composed of mainly 99% silica quartz that has washed down from the Appalachian Mountains via the Apalachicola River.

The sand, each piece having been ground down to a perfect oval, is so fine that if you listen closely, you can actually hear it squeak under your toes when you walk on it! The best part is that silica quartz generally has a slight pink hue to it, which should make our beaches pink. However, somewhere during its journey to the beaches, it lost its color, leaving Panama City Beach with its amazing white sand!

Top Beaches in America

Believe it or not, some of the most beautiful beaches in the world are actually located in Florida. The reason is that there are many beaches that have the same trademark white sand that Panama City Beach is known for. Pensacola Beach and Clearwater Beach (which lives up to its name) are listed among the 9 prettiest beaches in the world. Even Panama City Beach has been named as one of the prettiest beaches in America and has been compared to beaches in Puerto Rico and Hawaii. You absolutely need to come and visit us and see for yourself!
